Warren Central’s golf team on Friday was like a hair metal band drinking Pepsi Free while watching a collection of old VHS tapes — it was living in the 80s.
Seven of the Vikings’ 10 golfers shot scores in the 80s at the 2018 Viking Invitational at Clear Creek Golf Course. The grouping resulted in a team score of 339 and a third-place finish behind tournament winner Madison Central and runner-up Northwest Rankin.
Warren Central’s team was actually split into two squads, the Red and the Blue. The Red finished third, while the Blue posted a score of 357 and was fifth in the eight-team tournament.
“That’s really good. We had two teams going today, so we had a really good showing,” Warren Central coach Matt Williams said. “We’re posting scores where we need to be. We need to be under 365 to qualify for state, and we’re hosting the district tournament here, so that’s really good to see that we’re where we need to be.”
Chance Bishop led the way for Warren Central with an 81, and Hartley Sullivan was right behind with a personal-best round of 82. Mack Foley and Sean Dixon carded 86s, while Graham Tweedle, Taylor Lampkin and Zane Flaharty all were at 88.
Bishop was 10th in the individual standings. Sullivan tied for 11th place with St. Aloysius’ Wilson Palmertree and Northwest Rankin’s Nathan Slack.
Adding in Foley and Dixon, Warren Central’s top seven golfers all finished in the top half of the 57-man field.
“Hartley shot an 82, which is his personal best, so for an eighth-grader that’s pretty strong,” Williams said. “They had a couple of holes where they gave some shots away, but overall the five that we think are going to be the five that we take to state got what we’ve got to have.”
Palmertree was St. Al’s top finisher with his 82, and was also the only member of his team to break 90. Palmertree’s performance came a day after he shot a 75 and tied for second at the Germantown Invitational at Canton Country Club.
With his 75 on Thursday, Palmertree qualified for the MAIS Class AAA South State tournament as an individual. St. Al, however, has yet to have a team score under 350 this season and is in danger of missing that event as a team.
Joshua Larsen and Will Keen both shot 93s for St. Al on Friday. John Michael Jabour (96) and Davis Black (98) rounded out the team scoring.
Madison Central’s Spence Davis shot a 71 to win the individual championship, and the Jaguars had three other golfers break 80 as they rolled to the team title.
David Beard (75), Cade Wilkinson (78) and Chase Wilkinson (79) powered Madison Central to a team score of 303.
Northwest Rankin was second, at 316. Warren Central’s Red team (339), Clinton (348), Warren Central Blue (357), St. Aloysius (364), Brandon (384) and Ridgeland (458) rounded out the team standings.
Individually, Clinton’s Ryan Long shot a 73 to finish two shots back of Davis in second place, and Northwest Rankin’s Ryan Bell carded a 75 to place fourth.
