James Meredith “Jimmy” Speyerer

James Meredith “Jimmy” Speyerer, 93, died Friday, March 30, 2018, after an extended illness.

Jimmy was born in Vicksburg to the late Fred and Thelma Davis Speyerer. Jimmy lived in Vicksburg his entire life except for a tour of duty during WWII in the China-Burma- India theatre.

He was a retiree of the Waterways Experiment Station. Jimmy loved his family and was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. He was very active in the church and was a daily communicant. He was known for picking up members of the church who had no means of transportation and taking them to Mass. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Chaplin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Caldwell Speyerer; daughter, Nancy Rebecca Cook; brothers, George “Jack” Speyerer, Harry “Buzz” Speyerer; and sisters, Mona Ruth Joseph and Mary Paige Hastings.

He is survived by his son, Michael of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Jason Speyerer and Kristen Speyerer of Anchorage, Alaska, Tiffany Cook Johnson (Chip) of Meridian and Hayley Cook of Vicksburg; and great-grandchildren, Jarren Speyerer and Evie Speyerer of Anchorage, Alaska. He is also survived by brothers, David Speyerer (Jane) of Vicksburg and Edwin Speyerer (Cecilia) of Tampa, Fla., and numerous nieces; nephews; and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be at St. Paul’s Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 11 a.m.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Paul Banchetti, John Feminella, Ken Klaus, Sidney Seymour, Paul Speyerer and Chris Wells.

Memorial donations may be made to Vicksburg Catholic Schools or to St. Jude Hospital.
