Ole Miss caravan will make stop in Vicksburg on Tuesday

The Ole Miss Rebel Road Trip is bringing an all-star lineup to town when it makes a stop in Vicksburg this week.
The new head coaches for football and men’s basketball, Matt Luke and Kermit Davis, will be the headlining speakers when the caravan makes its stop at the Vicksburg Convention Center Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Ross Bjork and Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter will also be featured.
The Rebel Road Trip stops offer fans a chance to meet all of the officials, as well as autograph sessions, photo booths and merchandise. Lunch is included with the $20 ticket price.
Some tickets will be available at the door, but seating is limited so advance purchase online is encouraged, event organizer Laura Kidder said. Online purchase is available at rebelroadtrip.com.
Kidder, a Vicksburg resident and Ole Miss alumnus, said this was a rare opportunity for Vicksburg residents to meet some of the school’s high-profile athletic department figures.
“It’s not very often an Ole Miss head coach comes to Vicksburg,” Kidder said.
The Rebel Road Trip is in its seventh year, and the Vicksburg stop is one of 13 on this trip. The meet-and-greet tour with Ole Miss coaches and athletic department officials started Sunday in Charlotte, N.C., and will also include visits to New Orleans and New York City in addition to cities in Mississippi.
Tuesday’s stop in Vicksburg is the first of two scheduled for the day. The caravan will continue on to Indianola for another appearance in the evening.
In all, the Rebel Road Trip will hit 10 cities across the south in six days this week. Three more stops in New York, Jackson and Memphis are scheduled this summer.
“As it has in the past, the BancorpSouth Rebel Road Trip is going to provide an excellent platform to introduce our new coaches and personally thank Rebel Nation for its unwavering support,” Kyle Campbell, Ole Miss associate athletics director for communications, said in a school release. “We look forward to once again partnering with the Alumni Association and connecting with our fans, not only locally, but in some of our nation’s largest markets.”
Luke shrugged off his interim tag and became the full-time head coach after going 6-6 last season. He is tasked with rebuilding an Ole Miss program that has seen a lot of turmoil in recent years, first with the Hugh Freeze scandal, then with the NCAA investigation and pending sanctions.
Luke has provided some stability to the program, and will be answering questions and showing off the Egg Bowl trophy that returned to Oxford this year. Fans will be able to take pictures with the trophy.
Meanwhile, Davis will be in his first year as the men’s basketball coach. He replaces Andy Kennedy, who stepped down after 12 seasons as the winningest coach in Ole Miss history.
Davis will be trying to spark some life into a program that’s coming off its worst season in years and has historically not received the interest and support that the other major sports have in Oxford.
