Sophia H. Clark

Sophia H. Clark, 69, died on April 28, 2018, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 17, 1948, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Marshall (Jessie) Haynes. She was baptized at an early age and was a long time member of Travelers Rest

Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the mission ministry and as the church secretary.

Mrs. Clark graduated from Rosa A. Temple High School in 1966. She received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Alcorn State University. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was employed at Alcorn State University for 15 years and retired from the U.S. Corp of Engineers with 20 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall Haynes and Jessie Allen Haynes; one sister, Anna; and four brothers, Freddie Neal Haynes, Henry Lewis Sr., Matthew Lattimore and Marshall Haynes Jr.

Sophia leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 43 years, Sam; their dog, Maxx Clark; three brothers, George (Grangerette) Haynes Sr., Billy Ray Allen and Ralph Haynes Sr.; and other relatives, including Ben (Laura) Drake, Bilbo “Billy” (Sandra) Clark, Charlie (Evette) Thomas, Mary (James) Gilmore, Daisy (Eddie) Gilmore, Ruby (Frank) Gilmore, Cleveland (Anna) Long, Lela (Henry) Lewis, Edna (Marshall) Haynes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Lorraine McGowan and Laplose Jackson.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2018, at Travelers Rest Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas E. Bernard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home from 1 to 7 p.m. with family present from 6 to 7 p.m. and Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
