A controlled burn in Wilkinson County Friday may have an impact on residents in Warren County.
The U.S. Forestry Service will be performing a controlled burn of 2,800 acres in Homochitto National Forest in Wilkinson County, which is located 100 miles south of Vicksburg, Friday and residents in the southern part of Warren County may experience some smoke in the air.
“The general wind direction is headed that way so just out of precaution, we’ve contacted the emergency management just to let them know if you smell smoke or see some smoke, that’s where it is coming from,” said Jeff Bein, the fire management officer for the forest.
Bein said if smoke does make its way to Warren County, it would occur in the mid to late afternoon Friday as the forestry service was starting to light the fire around 10 a.m.
“We are to the south so the closer your are, that increases the chances of it. Being 100 miles, the concentration of smoke is not likely to be heavy, but we just wanted to give folks a heads up so if you see something you know where it is coming from,” Bein said.
