For the fourth summer in a row, the Vicksburg Warren School District will be offering free breakfasts and lunches to children in Warren County.
The summer meal program will start Monday and continue through June 29 with breakfast and lunch being served Monday through Friday.
The program is free for anyone 18 and under, even if the child doesn’t attend a VWSD school.
The meals will be served at Vicksburg High School and Warren Central Junior High.
“We do this every summer to continue our program through the summer and continue to help reach our community and provide healthy, well-balanced meals for breakfast and lunch at least through the month of June,” VWSD child nutrition director Laura Bounds said.
Breakfast will start each day at 8 a.m. and those who want to eat must be in line by 9:30 a.m. Lunch will start at 11 a.m. and people must be in line by 12:30 p.m.
Bounds said as part of the program, the closing times have to be strictly enforced. All meals must be eaten on site.
“We feed until 9:30. We have to shut the doors at 9:30 to start preparing for lunch. As long as you are in the doors by 9:30, we can serve you breakfast,” Bounds said. “We actually serve adults as well. Breakfast is $2 for adults and lunch is $3 for adults.”
Children who come to eat must be accompanied by a adult and cannot be dropped off.
The annual program is funded through a federal grant administered by the Mississippi Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
