Free meals for children vital during summer

With school out, some children don’t know where their next meal will come from. School lunch and breakfast are a vital part of keeping children nourished.
Thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, families in Warren County will not have to worry at least through the month of June.
The Vicksburg Warren School District will offer free breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday starting Monday and ending June 29.
The meals will be served at Vicksburg High School and Warren Central Junior High.
“We do this every summer to continue our program through the summer and continue to help reach our community and provide healthy, well-balanced meals for breakfast and lunch at least through the month of June,” VWSD child nutrition director Laura Bounds said.
Breakfast will start each day at 8 a.m. and those who want to eat must be in line by 9:30 a.m. Lunch will start at 11 a.m. and people must be in line by 12:30 p.m.
Bounds said as part of the program, the closing times have to be strictly enforced. And all meals must be eaten on site.
The program is free for anyone 18 and under, even if the child doesn’t attend a VWSD school. Children who come to eat must be accompanied by an adult and cannot be dropped off.
This program, which is in its fourth year, plays a vital role in making sure children are fed during the summer. If you know someone who can use the help during the summer, please help spread the word about this program. Or, if you need help yourself, please take advantage of this free service. Meals for adults will also be available and only cost $2 for breakfast and $3 for lunch.
