While resting at home with his wife and daughter on July 24, 2018, in Vicksburg, Dan Cook moved into his heavenly home. He was 75 years old.
Dan was born on Jan. 23, 1943, in Vicksburg to Dan Melvin Cook and Francis Cook. He was one of five children, including two sisters: Sybil Joyce Tompkins of Bullard, Texas, and Darlene Shipley of Jena, La.; and two brothers: Ronald McLendon of Jena, La., and Melvin Cook.
Dan was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
He is survived by Etta Pauline Cook, Donna Cook Gray, Dusty Gray, Danielle Gray, Aaron Moates, Laurie Ann Cook, Tiffany Nowell, Brittany Crist, Tonya Patino, Luis Patino, Crystal Mallory, Matthew Mallory, Jamie Mallory Brown, Michael Eugene Allen, Jessica Weeks, Milton Allen, Page Allen, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Dan Melvin Cook; mother, Francis Cook McLendon; brother, Melvin Cook and stepson, Steven Wayne Allen.
Dan served in the U.S. Army and went on to work in the newspaper industry. He eventually retired from the Clanton Advertiser in Clanton, Alabama, after 27 years. He was a member of the Clanton Lions Club and the Chilton County, Alabama, Exchange Club. During all of his years, he was widely known for his quick wit and desire to make people smile. He would often state “I am sure glad you got to see me today… your day will be better for it.” When Dan wasn’t making someone smile, he was always on the lookout for that perfect picture. His passion for photography was ever present whether he was capturing historical moments, fireworks shows over landmarks, or a simple wind chime in his front yard, Dan had an eye for capturing the scene perfectly.
