Porter’s Chapel Academy used a strong running game to control the clock and the game in defeating Hillcrest Christian 36-0 Friday night for its first victory of the season.
The Eagles racked up 362 rushing yards — on a whopping 62 attempts — and five different players scored touchdowns. Carter White led the way with 20 carries for 144 yards and a touchdown, Wade Dickard added 79 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts, and Tyler Washington ran it 10 times for 64 yards and a score.
Luke Yocum and Tristan Pickering also scored on short runs for the Eagles (1-2, 1-1 District 3-AAA).
“We had seven different people run the ball for us tonight. The fresh legs were good, and the offensive line was doing well,” PCA coach Blake Purvis said. “We were seeing six-man fronts and blitzing linebackers, and our line blocking and perimeter blocking were phenomenal.”
Dickard broke the ice for the Eagles on a 4-yard run in the final minute of the first quarter. On the final play of the first half, Yocum scored on a 1-yard run and Austin Rudd ran in the 2-pointer to make it 15-0.
Rudd finished with five PATs, the two-point conversion, and 33 rushing yards.
On the first drive of the second half, the Eagles continued to dominate as White — seeing his first game action of the season after suffering an abdominal injury in a summer workout in July — scored on an 11-yard run with 8:43 to play in the third quarter to make it 22-0.
After Pickering scored to go up 29-0, the freshman running back Washington broke free on a 15-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.
“Success and improvement by our running backs is definitely welcome. When you emphasize that in practice and show it paid off, that’s always good,” Purvis said. “We’ve done that all year. The things that we’re working on and need to fix, we’re making improvement in. The guys are practicing hard and taking their adjustments seriously.”
Yocum completed 3 of 5 passes for 78 yards for PCA, which only had two turnovers after committing eight in its first two games.
Josh Hunt led the defense with 10 tackles. McKinley Skipper also had 10 tackles and two sacks, and Cole Pittman had eight tackles and two sacks.
Porter’s Chapel will play at Central Private next Friday in Baker, Louisiana.
