PCA basketball car wash
Porter’s Chapel Academy’s basketball team and coach Cookie Johnson will hold a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Waffle House on South Frontage Road. The cost is $5 per car, and additional donations are welcome.
Citywide pep rally
The Vicksburg YMCA will host the annual Citywide Pep Rally on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Purks YMCA. Parking will be available at the Outlets of Vicksburg, with a shuttle to and from the YMCA. Local high school bands, pep squads and cheerleaders will perform as the event also kicks off the YMCA’s fundraising campaign to expand its child care service, offer more youth sports, and expand and update its facilities.
Bricks and Spokes
The 9th annual Bricks and Spokes bike ride is scheduled for Sept. 29, in and around Vicksburg and Warren County. The recreational bike ride will feature 10-, 30-, 50- and 62-mile routes spanning the city and county, including the Old Mississippi River Bridge and Vicksburg National Military Park. Professional riders Lauren Hall, a Vicksburg native, and Brad Huff will also be part of the pack. All types of bicycles are welcome, but all riders must wear helmets.

Alcorn golf tournament
The Alcorn State University Alumni Foundation will host its 10th Annual Purple and Gold Benefit Golf Tournament Oct. 5 at Clear Creek Golf Course in Bovina. The four-person scramble will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
The entry fee is $100 per person in advance, or $125 on the day of the event, and includes cart, lunch and beverages. Hole and corporate sponsorships are available. Prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin and longest drive, and a car will be awarded to anyone who makes a hole-in-one.

Red Carpet Bowl Golf
The 2018 Red Carpet Bowl Invitational golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13 and 14 at the Vicksburg Country Club. The format is a three-man scramble/shamble for the top two flights, and a scramble in both rounds for all other flights. The entry fee is $375 per team, and cash payouts of $1,000 for first place, $600 for second place and $300 for third (based on a full field) will be awarded.
Prizes for the longest drive and closest to the hole will also be awarded each day.

Over the River Run
The 30th annual Over the River Run, a 5-mile run and walk across the Old Mississippi River Bridge, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. at the Mississippi Welcome Center on Washington Street. The registration fee is $25 for the 5-mile races, or $10 for the children’s 1-mile fun run for children 10-and-under. There is also a $75 group rate for up to five family members living at the same address. The entry fee includes a long sleeve T-shirt and admission to the postrace party in Ameristar Casino’s Delta Point parking lot.

VHS archery tryouts
Tryouts for Vicksburg High School’s archery team will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m. in the VHS ROTC building. All archers must have completed a physical in order to try out. For more information, email coach Pam Piazza at pamela.piazza@vwsd.org
Fall tennis program
The City of Vicksburg’s fall tennis program is now under way. Sessions are held each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Halls Ferry Park through the end of the year. Spooky Sprint 5K
Registration is now open for the Spooky Sprint 5K. The 5-kilometer run and walk, 1-mile fun run and carnival is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 in downtown Vicksburg and is a fundraiser for Vicksburg Catholic Schools. The race will begin and end at BancorpSouth, 820 South Street. Runners and walkers are invited to compete in Halloween costumes for the lighthearted race.
