HATTIESBURG — They didn’t do enough to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They were snubbed by the NIT. Southern Miss, however, still found a way to keep its basketball season alive.
The Golden Eagles have accepted a bid to play in the College Basketball Invitational, the third level of college basketball’s postseason ladder. They’ll travel to play Longwood Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The CBI is a 16-team, single-elimination tournament. The finals are a best-of-three series. First-round games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the quarterfinals are next week.
The Southern Miss-Longwood winner will take on either DePaul or Central Michigan in the next round.
Longwood (15-17) is located in Farmville, Va. It lost to Hampton in the first round of the Big South Conference Tournament and finished the season on a four-game losing streak.
Longwood did, however, post a 10-5 record in non-conference games and is 6-0 at home against non-conference opponents.
Southern Miss was passed over for the NIT despite posting a 20-12 record and reaching the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
It will be the team’s first postseason appearance since playing in the 2014 NIT. Most of the wins from that season were later vacated because of NCAA sanctions.
