A 22-year-old Mississippi woman faces charges for allegedly stealing a 7-month-old pit bull puppy outside its owner’s home.

The Commercial Dispatch reports Amber Keating was arrested after neighbors reported seeing a woman dragging a dog through the neighborhood.

Authorities say Derrick Beckom left the puppy outside for about 10 minutes March 20 and when he didn’t respond to his call to come in, he realized something was wrong.

Beckom, a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper, says he called the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office to report the dognapping and within about a day, Keating was in custody and Zeke was back on Beckom’s porch.

Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cooper says if convicted of stealing a dog, Keating could face up to two years in prison. Keating is free after posting $5,000 bail.
