Mississippi man charged with cashing bogus state government checks

A Jackson man is charged with cashing counterfeit Mississippi state government checks.

State Auditor Shad White said Wednesday in a statement that 36-year-old Gregory Deante McCarty had been forging state payroll and income tax refund checks since at least 2014. White says a state Department of Finance & Administration analyst noted counterfeit checks cashed across the Jackson area.

McCarty was indicted last week on one count of false pretense by Rankin County grand jurors for trying to cash a $764.43 check in January. He was arrested Monday by agents for the auditor’s office. He’s charged as a habitual offender in an indictment citing two bad check convictions from 2009, and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
