New tools are crucial to police

Over the past few weeks, the Vicksburg Police Department has unveiled technologies aimed at meeting new demands on its personnel and addressing high-crime areas in the city.
The additions to the department’s toolbox, complete with a drone and two, solar powered surveillance trailers, provide the department unique deterrents to criminal activity in areas of the city without having to put personnel at risk.
The drone and the trailers did not come cheap, and we commend the city leadership for making the investment in the department and its capabilities.
The investments made in the department goes directly to enhancing the quality of life in Vicksburg and helps curtail crime in areas where constant — or unique — surveillance techniques are needed.
The dollars spent for these first responders, much like investments made in our fire department, always provide a return. During a time when finding qualified candidates for employment is a challenge, as well as retaining qualified personnel, trying to find creative ways to not only meet the same needs of yesterday, but meet the demands of tomorrow, is a must.
These recent purchases are part of that focus.
When it comes to our first responders, we must continue to show them the support, the financial support, in their efforts. We must continue to give those public servants the very best support we can afford, because we are asking so much of them.
