Opinion page a platform for different voices

Published 10:14 am Tuesday, August 27, 2019

Recently, we’ve had some guest columnists appear on this page.

The West Central MS AARP Chapter No. 4967 wrote a piece thanking their community partners for assistance with a school drive earlier this month.

Sylvia Gurtowski with the Vicksburg City Pool submitted a column about the summer season, thanking those who played a role in the pool’s success amidst some difficult and new changes.

Bettye Gardner, chair of the Dr. Jane McAllister Committee, submitted a column that will appear this week detailing information about McAllister, a good step in answering Mayor George Flaggs Jr.’s call to continue educating the community about her and eventually turn her home into a museum.

And The Vicksburg Beautification Committee has agreed to submit monthly columns.

I want our editorial pages to be a platform for different voices, ideas and opinions.

A newspaper belongs to the community it serves.  I know we have done our job when a reader says “my newspaper” when referring to The Vicksburg Post. Our goal is to make the The Post your newspaper both today and for many decades into the future. We want it to speak to the issues that you think are important. Whether it is the schools your children attend, the taxes that you pay, the companies you work for, the roads you drive on or the safety of your neighborhoods, the pages of this newspaper should speak to things that interest you.

Outside of editorials and our staff columns, I would love nothing more than to have an opinion page every day full of hyper-local content focused on Vicksburg and Warren County. Columns from local officials, those who hold leadership positions in community organizations and citizens who care about their community and where it is heading, can make the town we call home a better place to live, work and play by submitting a column or letter to the editor.

We want to hear from you.

What do you think of the articles we’ve published or the things happening in our community? Submit a letter to the editor by emailing tim.reeves@vicksburgpost.com. Letters to the editor should be no longer than 400 words in length and must be signed.

Do you have information you’d like to share with our readers? Submit your news to us in 500 words or less, along with your photograph, to publish as a submitted column.

Photographs should be 200 dpi or greater and submitted with the column to news@vicksburgpost.com.
