The Mississippi Department of Transportation will close Mississippi 465 from U.S. 61 North to the backwater levee beginning Tuesday at 2 p.m.

MDOT spokesman Mike Flood said information from the Central District engineer indicated the highway was underwater, forcing the closure of the road.

The road is flooded when the Mississippi River reaches a level of 46.5 feet. The river’s present stage was 47.04 feet Tuesday.

The Mississippi is expected to crest at 50 feet at Vicksburg on April 8.

MDOT closed the highway because of flooding in February and reopened it from U.S. 61 North to the backwater levee March 17.

Flood said the portion of 465 from the backwater levee to the gin at Eagle Lake remains closed.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District closed the Steele Bayou Control Structure Monday, and the backwater is expected to crest at about 96 feet.
