A Vicksburg man died in a single-vehicle wreck early Friday morning in the Eagle Lake community.
According to a report from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Dakota Nevels, 29, was killed in the wreck that occurred about 12:08 a.m. on MS 465 at Eagle Lake Shore Road.
Preliminary reports indicate the 2015 Kia Soul driven by Nevels was southbound when for unknown reasons it left the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.
Nevels was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle into the backwater area along the road. Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said a sheriff’s deputy, an Eagle Lake firefighter and a witness to the wreck waded into the water to recover Nevels’ body, which was underwater. He was found in waist- to chest-deep water, Pace said.
Nevels was pronounced dead at the scene by Warren County Coroner Dough Huskey. Huskey said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
The MHP said speed is considered a factor in the crash and toxicology reports have been requested.
