Greatest on the Gridiron: ’77 St. Aloysius vs. ’06 Porter’s Chapel

This first-round matchup in The Vicksburg Post’s Greatest on the Gridiron tournament pits the 1977 St. Aloysius Flashes against the 2006 Porter’s Chapel Academy Eagles.

The ‘77 Flashes used a powerful offense led by quarterback Tommy Alonzo, who threw a school-record 20 touchdown passes, and the school’s career rushing leader Mike Ray to finish 11-1. They averaged 35.9 points per game and won the Capital Conference championship, but a perfect season was spoiled with a 21-3 loss to Kosciusko in their postseason bowl game.

After reaching the MAIS Class A semifinals in 2005, Porter’s Chapel moved up to Class AA in 2006 and again got within one win of a state championship appearance while finishing with a 10-4 record. Quarterback Hayden Hales set school records with 2,449 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, while wide receiver Cole Smith caught 15 touchdown passes.
