With a boost from ESPN, the game of cornhole is continuing to grow in popularity. Tournaments are being held throughout the U.S. and winners take home cash prizes.
Vicksburg will host its first cornhole tournament Saturday at the Vicksburg Convention Center beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The event is being organized by Jeff Richburg, American Cornhole League regional director for Central MS Cornhole & Good Times.
“This will be the first regional of the year,” Richburg said. The league’s season began Sept. 1.
The tournament is open to all ages and participants can choose the division they would like to compete in, which includes novice, competitive and advanced.
Competitors can also decide if they want to play in a singles tournament or play in the BYOP (Bring Your Own Partner) doubles tournament.
“We will also have two divisions in advanced and competitive with a blind draw,” Richburg said, which is where there will be a computer matchup.
All equipment — boards and bags — will be regulated by the league and the tournament is double elimination. Cash prizes will be awarded in all divisions.
Walk-ins are welcome, with registration being held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
“Anybody can walk in and play,” Richburg said, adding, “If you just throw in your backyard, you are not going to go up against the best guys there. You are going to be separated.”
As one of three regional directors in the state, Richburg said he will be hosting anywhere from eight to 10 tournaments over the course of the next 12 months at different locations.
This is Richburg’s third year as a regional director and he said he is expecting players from all over the state and Louisiana to turn out on Saturday. He encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the day whether as a spectator or as a competitor.
All COVID-19 guidelines that pertain to the Vicksburg Convention Center will be maintained during the tournament.
