Joyce McMillan Evans, 88, of Houston, Texas went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sept. 5, 2020. She was born in Vicksburg on May 17, 1932, to Ernest G. and Gladys (Pieplow) McMillan. She and her family remained in Vicksburg and settled in the Yokena area. Joyce and Gordon Evans were married in her family home on Feb. 16, 1951.
Joyce and Gordon moved to Memphis, Tenn. shortly after marrying, and both attended classes at Mid-South Bible College. Their first two sons were born in Memphis. After moving to Chicago, Gordon and Joyce had another son and settled in West Chicago, Ill., where they lived for 36 years. They were very active at West Chicago Bible Church. Joyce served as church secretary for many years, along with being involved in Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, choir and more.
In 1995, Joyce and Gordon retired back to Joyce’s family home in Vicksburg. They joined Immanuel Baptist Church and were involved in the choir and “Keenager” group there. Even late in life Joyce continued to help with vacation bible school and teaching children. They made their way to Houston, Texas in 2013.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of over 69 years, Gordon (Aug. 7, 2020), and her sister, Sandra (Crevitt). She is survived by her sister, Mavis (Wilson), of Vicksburg, and by her sons, Gordon Jr. (Mike) and wife Denise, of Tucson, Ariz., Gilbert (Gil) and wife Gail, of Camdenton, Mo., and Oscar (Ozzie) and wife Kristin, of Houston. Joyce also leaves behind nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Joyce will be sorely missed, but we rejoice in knowing she is safely in the arms of her savior and reunited with Gordon and so many other family members and friends.
Services will be held at Forest Park Westheimer in Houston on Sept. 19, 2020, and can also be viewed streamed live on the Forest Park Westheimer Facebook page starting at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Buckner Parkway Place, 1321 Park Bayou Drive, Houston, TX 77077, who lovingly cared for Joyce. Please note Senior Assistance Fund with your donation-this fund allows loved ones to be cared for regardless of ability to pay.
