City of Vicksburg Ward 1 Alderman Michael Mayfield passed away overnight in an area hospital following his second battle with cancer, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. confirmed Tuesday morning.
“It is with great sadness that Mayor George Flaggs Jr. joins the City of Vicksburg in mourning the death of Ward 1 Alderman Michael A. Mayfield Sr.,” city officials said in a statement Tuesday morning. “Alderman Mayfield dedicated his life to being a public servant advocating for improving the quality of life for citizens in the City of Vicksburg. The employees of the City of Vicksburg’s hearts are heavy as they try to continue conducting business without him.”
Mayfield was first elected to the North Ward Alderman position in July of 2005. Prior to serving as alderman, he served as District 2 supervisor for the Warren County Board of Supervisors for ten years. A product of the Vicksburg Public School System, Alderman Mayfield graduated with high honors from Hinds Community College receiving his associate’s degree in basic electronic and electricity. He is certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.
City official said Flaggs and Ward 2 Alderman Alex Monsour will endeavor to carry on Mayfield’s work in honor of all of his contributions to the City of Vicksburg and Warren County as a whole.
“While his contributions to public service are immeasurable, Alderman Mayfield tirelessly worked towards beautifying the community, ensuring top quality utility services for citizens and the creation of ordinances that codified public safety measures and compliance requirements for derelict property owners. In his absence, the city must honor his legacy by continuing his momentum towards ensuring that the City of Vicksburg remains a safe community united by love and mutual respect.
“The City of Vicksburg extends its sincerest condolences to his devoted and loving wife, Bertha McCalpin Mayfield, their three children and grandchildren, and his loving family. He served as a member and deacon at Mt Zion #4 Baptist Church and served as a member of the Warren County Children’s Shelter Board, Central Mississippi Planning and Development District and Steering Community for Warren Yazoo Mental Health member.”
Flaggs asks that the community keep Alderman Mayfield’s family in its prayers as they prepare to honor his memory.
“The third floor of City Hall will never be the same,” Flaggs said. “Alderman Mayfield will always be remembered for his unique voice, his ethical and assertiveness as a leader and his compassionate spirit. He will be missed. Alderman Mayfield was most definitely an authentic leader, and his powerful unique voice will resonate through all of those touched by his momentous life.”
