Lady Vikes win twice at Brookhaven softball tournament

Warren Central’s softball team got back to work, and back to winning on Saturday.
The Lady Vikes returned from spring break by winning twice at the Brookhaven tournament, beating Loyd Star 5-4 and West Marion 5-0.
In the first game, against Loyd Star, Jenn Smith went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. She hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Lady Vikes a walk-off win in the shortened game.
Smith also drove in two runs with a single in the third inning that tied the score at 3. Loyd Star’s Abby Burnette singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning before Warren Central (9-3) rallied to win it.
Makayla Jackson and Sarah Cameron Fancher each had a hit and scored two runs, including on Smith’s double.
Madison Pant allowed one unearned run and struck out three batters in three innings of relief.
The Lady Vikes had a much easier time with West Marion in game two.
Pant went 3-for-3 with one RBI, and also pitched a four-inning shutout in the 5-0 victory. She did not walk a batter and finished with five strikeouts.
Keke McKay was 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run scored, and two stolen bases. She and Kamryn Morson each hit RBI singles in the third inning as the Lady Vikes scored four runs to blow it open.
The Lady Vikes have now won five of their last six games as they head into the start of their MHSAA Region 2-6A schedule. They will play at Ridgeland on Thursday at 6:15 p.m., then continue up I-55 for two games in the South Panola tournament in Batesville on March 22 and 23.
