100 Years Ago: 1924

Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Jacobson entertained friends at a housewarming. • Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lum returned from a visit to Texas and Oklahoma. • Over 1,000 people went to the local exposition and the style show proved a big success.

90 Years Ago: 1934

Mayor J.C. Hamilton learned the U.S.S. Constitution may make a trip up the Mississippi River. • Sen. John Culkin was elected president of the Vicksburg Rotary Club. • Gen. George Leach was in Vicksburg to locate a campsite for the state guard.

80 Years Ago: 1944

Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Giffin were in Hopkinsville, Ky. • John T. McNeill passed away. • Services were held for Ella Wright.

70 Years Ago: 1954

Chance White Newbaker, a 29-year-old local carpenter, drowned while fishing at Palmyra Island. • The city’s new jet-type fogging machines were put into service. • James A. Varner, a well-known Bovina farmer, died. 

60 Years Ago: 1964

Shouphie Habeeb was the guest speaker at the Crawford Street Methodist Church Wesleyan Service Guild. • Juanita Carnes, Red Cross home nursing representative, taught a mother and baby care instruction course. • Lucille Randell died.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Leon A. Williams received a sterling silver money clip for 20 years of service at the Westinghouse Interior Lighting Division Plant. • U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Robert W. Teeter was selected to represent his unit in the 1974 Strategic Air Command missile combat competition at Vandenberg AFB in California.  

40 Years Ago: 1984

Mr. and Mrs. Don McAuley announced the birth of their daughter, Katherine Lynn. • Pearl Myers Glazier, of Rolling Fork, died. • Richard Lee Kitchens III celebrated his first birthday.

30 Years Ago: 1994

County supervisors got a 10-percent pay raise. • Hardy “Buddy” Palmer became the new headmaster at Porter’s Chapel Academy.

20 Years Ago: 2004

Rock Radio 104.5’s transmitter station in Tallulah was destroyed by fire.

10 Years Ago: 2014

Egg prices in Vicksburg were expected to rise due to new California law. • Members of the city’s Board of Architectural Review were chastised for not maintaining historic buildings. • United Way participated in the Day of Caring.
