A man who is considered a person of interest in a homicide investigation in Webster, Texas is awaiting extradition in the Warren County Jail after a 24-hour manhunt ended in his arrest early Tuesday morning.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies Daniel Thomas and Andrew Clemts arrested 29-year-old fugitive Marcus Thompson without incident at approximately 6:15 a.m. when the suspect stepped out of a wooded area at the intersection of Highway 27 and China Grove Road.

Pace said the manhunt began some 24 hours earlier when officials in Texas informed the Warren County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) of Thompson’s possible presence in the area, alerting WCSO the suspect has a family member in Warren County, as well as multiple family members in parishes in east Louisiana.

Webster Police Department Assistant Chief of Police Jeremy Edge said Thompson was officially wanted for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, but is also considered a person of interest in a homicide investigation.

Pace said deputies located the missing black Nissan Altima Monday in a wooded area off China Grove Road and confirmed through the vehicle’s license plate the car belonged to the victim in the Webster homicide case.

“We staked it out for about four-and-half hours,” Pace said. “He never returned to the car. It was close to 10 p.m. when we approached the vehicle.”

Pace said a search that included canine units from Rankin and Madison counties, as well as troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, lasted throughout the night before Thompson was apprehended.

“We had checkpoints on the roads for about 12 hours,” Pace said. “When he was arrested, there was nothing on his person to indicate he had made contact with anyone here. It’s still not clear why he pulled the car off the road in the area where he did.”

Pace said Thompson will not face charges in Warren County and is currently being housed in the Warren County Jail awaiting transport back to Texas.

Edge said Texas officials will travel to Warren County Tuesday afternoon to continue their investigation.
