TALLULAH — Tallulah Academy was cruising along toward a berth in the MAIS Class 2A baseball championship series — until it suddenly wasn’t.
Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s Wesley Sanchez hit a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning, and Charles Grezaffi followed with another RBI single, as the Rams stunned Tallulah 6-4 on Friday to win the deciding Game 3 of the Class 2A South State championship series.
Tallulah was denied in its bid to reach the state championship series for the third time in four seasons. Instead, it’ll be WCCA (15-7) that moves on to play Kemper Academy in the best-of-three Class 2A finals next week.
Wilkinson Christian overcame a 4-0 deficit by scoring all of its runs from the fifth inning on. Gavin Davis hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to start the comeback, and Easton Buteaux was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to tie it.
Tallulah (23-11) did not have a hit after the fourth inning. Tripp Gayle’s RBI single put the Trojans ahead 4-0 in the third, and then 13 of their last 15 batters were retired by WCCA pitcher Brayden Ready.
Ready allowed six hits and four walks, and struck out five batters.
Hayes Hopkins and Brayson Morson hit RBI singles in the first inning for Tallulah. Pitcher J.T. McDaniel had six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
