A toast to the moms who always put others first

My dad was in a plane crash 30 years ago and he suffered a spinal cord injury. Obviously, the accident changed my dad’s life, but it also impacted my mom’s.
She would never tell you it did because, one: She is just not that kind; and two: The love she has for my dad surpasses any kind of obstacle she has ever had to face.
Even after all these years, when her health is not that of a spring chicken anymore, she strives to make his life normal as if the crash had never happened.
Her devotion to my dad and really to all her family is amazing.
Dad may get the lion’s share, but none of her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren have gone lacking.
For instance, at Christmas, even though we may assist in getting some of the gifts for her since the family has grown so large, it doesn’t fail that she still goes out shopping — mom doesn’t shop online — and makes a point of getting each one of us something unique and special, whether it’s a book she thinks will be inspiring or a fun gadget for cooking.
Mom also makes it a point to have some kind of little happy at each of our place settings when we gather for holidays and, of course, the table is always beautifully set.
A few years back, the women in the family tried persuading mom to use paper plates instead of china so we could spend more time visiting than cleaning after the meal. She balked at the idea, but finally acquiesced. But just so you know, the paper plates she uses are not the ones from Walmart — they are more of the designer style. As for utensils, she still pulls out the silver.
That’s just mom, a lady through and though.
Sometimes I wonder if I was adopted!
Mom is not only a good wife and mother, but she is also the bomb when it comes to grandmothering.
So much so that my children have even pointed out that I am not like “Honey” — my mom’s grandmother name — and I just reply, “No, I’m not and I’m not even going to try, because there is no way I would even come close.”
There is so much more that I could say about mom, but I know if I say much more, she would probably get a stick to me.
Mom is not a braggy person and never toots her own horn, but on this Mother’s Day, I decided I would drive this train and just point out how I am such a lucky girl to have a mother like mine.
Happy Mother’s Day, mom.
