City’s abuzz for Vicksburg Pollinator Week

This week is officially Vicksburg Pollinator Week after Mayor George Flaggs Jr. presented a proclamation during Monday’s regular meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
The weeklong designation, lasting from June 17-23, helps recognize the importance of some of the smallest creatures in the local ecosystem, such as bees, and the roles they play in producing large portions of the food supply, as well as their adding to the health of local forests.
Rebecca Sigh with Vicksburg Farmers’ Market, along with Vicksburg Main Street Program Executive Director Kim Hopkins, accepted the proclamation during Monday’s meeting.
“Pollinator Week is actually a worldwide celebration and movement,” Sigh said during the meeting. “So, this week, to celebrate – at the end of this week on Saturday – we’re going to have “Pollinatorpalooza” at the Farmers’ Market. Without our pollinators, we wouldn’t have the fresh produce that we are able to provide to this community.”
The Vicksburg Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays in May, June and July from 8 until 11 a.m. on the corner of Washington and Jackson streets in downtown Vicksburg.
