For the second week in a row, Vicksburg’s runners and walkers lapped the field at one of Mississippi’s summer road races.

Will Bates beat a field of 198 runners to win the prestigious Tomato Festival 5K Saturday in Crystal Springs, and Terrie Foster won the event’s women’s 5K race walk championship. Both Vicksburg residents accomplished the same feat on June 22 at the Star Spangled Night Run 5K in Vicksburg.

Bates, a 17-year-old rising junior at Warren Central, won with a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds — just six seconds ahead of Gauge Montgomery. Bates’ time was nearly a minute faster than his winning time of 19:04 at the Night Run.

Larry Robinson, one of Mississippi’s best race walkers, won the 5K walk championship with a time of 32:11. But right behind him was a pack of Vicksburg’s best.

Ron Roma finished second in 32:58, Foster was third overall in 33:51, and Steve Pranger fourth in 35:37.

Another Vicksburg resident, Elizabeth Joyner, finished seventh overall and second in the women’s division in 37:02. A total of 77 people participated in the 5K walk.
