The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) during a ceremony held Monday officially promoted its newest sergeant and swore in two new offices.

Taking the oath as new officers were Hunter Anderson and Edward Knight.

“We’re here today because we believe in the Vicksburg Police Department,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said. “We believe that you’re doing what you need to do; that you’re doing a phenomenal job.”

During Monday’s ceremony, VPD also officially promoted officer Dewayne Powers to the rank of sergeant.

“This is a well-deserved promotion for this young man,” Chief of Police Penny Jones said.

Jones said Powers’ track record of excellence as an officer and calm demeanor have made him a steady force for good among VPD personnel.

“He could be overjoyed and you’d never know it,” Jones joked. “This is probably the most emotion we’ve ever seen out of him.”
