Adria Burrell took the first steps toward what she hopes is a golden week on the track.

The Warren Central sprinter clocked a time of 12.31 seconds in the 100 meters on Tuesday to advance to the semifinal round at the AAU Junior Olympics in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Burrell had the 21st-fastest time among 87 runners in the girls’ 17-18-year-olds’ age division. Kymora-Lee Williams of Nashville topped the field with a time of 11.64 seconds.

The top 24 runners in each age division advanced to Thursday’s semifinal round. The top eight from those heats will move on to the finals on Saturday.

Burrell will  have a busy day Wednesday as she is scheduled to compete in two heats of the 200 meters. The preliminary round, scheduled for Monday night, was postponed because of bad weather, so it and the semifinals will both be contested on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, recent Warren Central graduate Jonathan Henderson will compete in the boys’ 17-18-year-olds’ high jump. Henderson won the 2023 MHSAA Class 6A championship in the event and has signed with South Alabama.

Another Warren Central athlete, Dwight Palmer, will compete in the semifinals of the 200 meters in the boys’ 15-16-year-olds’ division on Wednesday.

Palmer had a time of 22.21 seconds in Monday’s preliminary round, which was the sixth-fastest among 99 runners.

Palmer, Burrell and Henderson are all competing for the Olympus Bound track club, which is led by St. Aloysius coach Michael Fields.
