The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a significant risk for extreme temperatures in Vicksburg and surrounding areas in Warren County.

High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s with heat indices from 111 to 115 degrees. Heat stroke is increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor activity in these conditions, NWS officials warend.

Those who must be outside in these extreme temperatures are advised to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, take cool showers or baths, limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, take breaks inside or in a shady area, avoid direct sunlight if at all possible, and try to schedule outdoor activities earlier or later in the day, when it is cooler.

The signs of heat cramps include heavy sweating and muscle pain and spasms.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness and fatigue. Those who experience these symptoms should stop work immediately and hydrate, officials cautioned.

Signs of heat stroke are rapid pulse, confusion, headache, nausea, above-average body temperature and passing out.

The American Red Cross encourages anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek medical attention immediately.
