100 Years Ago: 1924

Mrs. F. Garnish departed for Jackson. • Lillian Caston and her daughter departed for New Orleans and Biloxi. • Mr. and Mrs. Ben Seay left for Cooper’s Well.

90 Years Ago: 1934

John Quackenboss, who was connected with the Mississippi Valley Barge Company, was in Vicksburg. • Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Jackson returned from a trip to Baton Rouge. • The two-story brick building on the northwest corner of Washington and Veto streets was being remodeled by the Mississippi Building and Loan Association.

80 Years Ago: 1944

Brother William from St. Aloyisus in New Orleans became the new principal at St. Aloysius in Vicksburg. • Mrs. E. H. Puryear was visiting her husband in New Orleans. • John Brooks was promoted to first-class petty officer in the U.S. Navy,

70 Years Ago: 1954

A new campsite was given to the YMCA by Bart C. Tully of Anderson-Tully Company. • Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Dent, along with Ethel and Hilda, were vacationing in Chicago. • Alberta Willis died.

60 Years Ago: 1964

Services were held for Mildred Terrell of Tallulah. • Bryant Wheeler died. • Dr. and Mrs. A. Street left for their annual vacation to Highlands, N.C. 

50 Years Ago: 1974

The Etta O’Neill Library had a reception that honored local writer Tommy Whitaker. • The sons of Mrs. Juliet Howe Harmon donated her book of poems about life in early Vicksburg and the South, titled “Memories of the Last Gray,” to the Vicksburg Public Library. • Toni Lee Stubbs celebrated her third birthday.

40 Years Ago: 1984

William Schuman, 24, was killed in an auto accident on U.S. 61 near Waltersville. • Cedar Grove, the antebellum tour home and bed and breakfast inn on Oak Street, received the American Automobile Association Four Diamond Award for 1983-84. • Graveside services were held for Dr. Joseph Petteway.

30 Years Ago: 1994

Riverfront Park was scheduled to open on September 7. • Karl’s Ladies Boutique closed its doors for the last time.

20 Years Ago: 2004

The sixth annual job fair was held at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

10 Years Ago: 2014

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. presented Andy Hardwick with a resolution. • “Les Miserables” opened at the Vicksburg Theatre Guild. • Schools geared up for Common Core State Standards.
