St. Al’s Edwards finishes second at season-opening cross country meet

St. Aloysius ran to daylight in the twilight.

Samantha Edwards finished second to lead four St. Al runners in the top 16, and the Lady Flashes were third in the team standings Saturday at the season-opening Cathedral Twilight XC cross country meet in Natchez.

Edwards had a time of 12 minutes, 35 seconds for the two-mile race. Simpson Academy’s Lilly Overby, the reigning MAIS Class 5A champion, won easily with a time of 11:33.

Hendrix Eldridge finished ninth for St. Al, in 14:02. Julia Tuminello was right behind her in 11th place, in 14:30, and Luella Lambiotte was 16th in 15:44.

Simpson Academy won the girls’ team title with 45 points. Columbia Academy was second, with 47 points, and St. Al third with 54.

In the boys’ varsity meet, St. Al’s Dalton Windham clocked a time of 12:13 to finish seventh out of 47 runners. Loyd Star’s Gauge Montgomery won with a time of 11:17.

Cohen Coomes (17th place, 13:08) and William Roberson (20th place, 13:16) also finished in the top 20.

St. Al totaled 59 points to finish third in the boys’ team standings. Simpson Academy won, with 29 points, and Cathedral was second with 42.

St. Al’s next cross country meet is Sept. 7, at the French Camp Academy Invitational.
