Tree limbs littered Vicksburg’s streets and power outages were common following a line of severe thunderstorms that plowed through the city Sunday night, and one sports facility was not spared.
A 100-foot section of the outfield fence at Porter’s Chapel Academy’s baseball field was knocked down by the high winds. The high right field wall, affectionately known as “The Blue Monster” by the school’s community, was laying on the ground Monday morning with one corner left leaning.
“Storm blew in last night. That thing’s old. We reinforced it a couple of years ago and it finally took its toll,” said Blake Purvis, PCA’s athletics director and head of school.
Purvis wasn’t yet sure when or how the fence would be repaired or replaced. He said, however, that having to do it in the coming months might allow the opportunity to do other work on the hill and road behind the fence.
“We’ve got grass. It’s not washing much. It’s pretty filled in with grass now. But because of the situation we’re in now where we have to rebuild the fence, now’s the time to do any other work you need done alongside that road,” Purvis said.
