AT&T workers on strike in Vicksburg

Workers from the Communication Workers of America (CWA) union employed by AT&T are on strike in nine states across the Southeast part of the country this week. This includes the Vicksburg chapter of CWA, whose members were seen picketing Tuesday on Cherry Street.

Dillon Moore, president of the local chapter of CWA, spoke to The Post about the strike, explaining what has workers raising picket signs amid the rising summer temperatures.

“The union called the unfair labor practice strike last Friday, and that was for not bargaining in good faith,” Moore said. “So we are here at the request of the union to be on strike to let the public know what’s going on.”

Moore said that striking employees in the Vicksburg chapter include call center employees, technicians who install and repair home internet and phone service, and technicians who bury service lines from terminals to homes.

“We’re all on strike together,” he said.

According to CWA, the strike involves more than 17,000 workers across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

In a press release the CWA stated the organization “has filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board against AT&T for not bargaining in good faith, engaging in surface bargaining, and not sending representatives to the bargaining table with the authority to make decisions. The charges also address the company’s refusal to bargain over mandatory subjects of bargaining and reneging on agreements made in bargaining.”

“We’ll be glad to get back to work as soon as the union gives us the go-ahead,” Moore said.

According to published reports, AT&T workers began walking off the job Friday after attempts to reach a new contract that date back to June once again stalled.

According to reporting from the Associated Press, AT&T denies the union’s allegations.

“CWA’s claims of unfair labor practices are not grounded in fact. We have been engaged in substantive bargaining since Day One and are eager to reach an agreement that benefits our hard-working employees,” the company said in a statement.

According to the AP, AT&T said it reached three separate agreements this year covering more than 13,000 employees.
