Leslie Weill Marcus passed away peacefully Sunday, August 18, at the age of 94.

Leslie was born in Baton Rouge, the daughter of Julius Weill and Doris Levy Weill.

A graduate of Baton Rouge High School, Leslie attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She was a member of Sigma Delta Tau Sorority.

On October 31, 1951, Leslie married Richard Preis Marcus and celebrated her 72nd wedding anniversary with him last Halloween before his death in March of this year.

Leslie and Richard were an inseparable couple in Vicksburg and attended all events that took place. Upon moving to Vicksburg as a young bride, Leslie was quite a social person. She became a Red Cross lady at Kuhn Memorial Hospital. She also became very involved in the Jewish community. Leslie was active in Anshe Chesed Congregation, the Antique Club and Supper Club.

In her younger years, Leslie took up golf, tennis, bridge and Mah Jongg. She got to know many people by participating in these various activities. More recently, she joined the YMCA and became involved in many activities there.

Leslie was always busy filling her calendar. Family members, who were very important to her, had to book ahead to make plans with her. She always had time for them.

It was truly a surprise that Leslie lived such a long active life. According to her, she had been dying since she was 40. Some of her children’s friends joked and called her “the poor sick mother.”

Leslie was never at a loss for words, and was loved by all who knew her. She was a sweet person and had a dynamic personality. Leslie was well known in the community for her “iced brownies” and will be remembered for “the famous Leslie brownies.”

Leslie lived a full life with her beloved Richard. She died with a smile on her face knowing she will now join her wonderful husband.

Leslie was preceded in death by Richard; her parents; her brother, Gus Weill; and sister, Sue Weill Preis.

She is survived by her children, Susan Marcus Dampf and husband, Jack of Baton Rouge, Kim Marcus Pace and husband, Martin and Ricky Marcus. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paige Marcus Dampf, Paul Martin Dampf and wife, Stacy, Patricia Dampf Sklar and husband, Alex; and great grandchildren, David, Susanna, Bradley, Aaron and Adeline.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 22, at 11 a.m. at Duff Green Mansion, 1114 First East St. in Vicksburg with a reception to follow. Honorary pallbearers are Stan Kline, Steven Marcus, Miles Marcus, Felix Weill, Fred Preis and Harold Brandt.
