Warren Central wins 12 events, team title at early-season swim meet

The Fun in the Sun swim meet lived up to its name for Warren Central.

The Vikings won the combined team points title by winning 12 events, and qualified 16 swimmers for the MHSAA Class II North State meet in the first meet of the season Saturday.

Ashtin Wallace and Jacob Byrd led the Vikings to the boys’ team title as well, by winning two individual events each and teaming up on the winning 200 yard medley and 400 freestyle relays.

James McKenna and Thomas Kilroy were the other members of the relay teams. The medley relay had a time of 1 minute, 55.86 seconds, while the freestyle relay hit the wall in 3:45.54.

Wallace won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.68, and the 100 yard butterfly in 56.86 seconds.

Byrd won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.66 and the 500 freestyle in 5:52.57.

McKenna also snagged an individual victory in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.05 seconds, and was second in the 100 butterfly.

Kilroy finished third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 200.

For Warren Central’s girls’ team, Avery Greer and Kara Rowe each won two individual events and teamed with Ella Opperman and Addison Billings to win the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:26.96.

The same group finished second in the 200 yard medley relay.

Greer won the 200 and 500 freestyle races with times of 2:20.53 and 6:27.88, respectively.

Rowe took first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:44.76, and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:12.52.

Billings took third in the 50 free and second in the 500 free, while Ella Opperman finished third in the 200 free and 100 butterfly.

The Vikings and Lady Vikes totaled 106 points to win the combined points championship. Pontotoc was second, with 97 points, West Jones was third with 71 and Newton County fourth with 41.

Warren Central also won the boys’ team championship and was second in the girls’ standings.

Warren Central will have two more meets this season at City Pool — Sept. 7 at noon, and Sept. 21 at 10 a.m.
