Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. on Monday announced the details of proposed hikes for city trash collection, which he said he intends to recommend to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen for approval.

In a statement released Monday morning, Flaggs said he plans to recommend a monthly increase of $4.50 — from the current rate of $16.50 to $21 — for twice-weekly residential trash collection, as well as for collection at commercial locations outside of downtown. Rates for commercial customers in the downtown district will remain at $40.15 per bin, per month, with collection occurring four times per week.

Officials said the new $21 monthly fee will cover twice-weekly collection for one green trash bin. Customers interested in renting an additional brown trash bin may do so for a fee of $25.50 per bin, per month.

Commercial customers located downtown may opt to have up to four bins at the $40.15 rate per bin and can request up to three additional bins at the same rate.

Flaggs also announced the city will assume responsibility for the collection of trash placed outside of designated bins, including limbs and debris. City officials said Waste Management, the company contracted for trash pick-up with the City of Vicksburg, now charges extra fees to collect trash, limbs and other debris placed outside of designated bins.

“For residents experiencing an overflow of trash or needing to arrange for limb and debris pick-up, the city will provide this service upon request,” officials said in the statement.

Residents needing assistance with limbs and debris are asked to call the action line at 601-636-3411 and allow up to seven business days from the request date for collection.

“We understand that changes to our garbage collection services can be challenging,” Flaggs said. “The increase in fees and the new responsibility for debris pick-up are necessary adjustments to ensure we maintain a high level of service. We are committed to  providing effective waste management and appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation during this transition.”

Flaggs said, if approved, the changes will go into effect Tuesday, Oct. 1.
