Raiders sign St. Aloysius alum Ben Brown to practice squad

Ben Brown didn’t get the news he wanted Tuesday, but got some better news Wednesday.

The Las Vegas Raiders waived the Vicksburg native as they made cuts to get down to the NFL’s 53-man roster limit, then announced Wednesday that they’ve signed him to the practice squad.

The practice squad is a 16-man supplemental roster that NFL teams can use to bolster their 53-man active roster. Practice squad players work out with the team, and can be moved to the active roster ahead of a game if they are needed.

Brown, a 6-foot-5, 313-pound offensive lineman, played high school football at St. Aloysius in Vicksburg and in college at Ole Miss. He played center during three preseason games with the Raiders, but can also play guard which makes him a valuable depth piece.

Brown was one of 14 players that the Raiders signed to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Brown signed a reserve/futures contract — essentially an offseason deal that ran through the end of training camp — with the Raiders in January. That followed a tumultuous 2023 season in which he was on the roster or practice squads of the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. He played in one regular-season game with Seattle.

Brown is entering his third season in the NFL. He was on injured reserve with the Bengals in 2022 after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent.
