Harry Rice and P.L. Barclift drove to Lake Providence to distribute Dollar Day literature. • Vicksburg ends the season by winning two games with Monroe. • Joe Biedenharn was visiting Vicksburg from Monroe.

Hazel Brown returned from a visit with relatives in Kilbourne, La. • The Rev. S.F. Campbell, pastor of Crawford Street Methodist Church, was conducting a revival meeting in north Mississippi. • Mr. and Mrs. John Cobrum of Jackson were visiting Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Wilson.

80 Years Ago: 1944

Mrs. R.L. Crook returned from a visit to Birmingham. • Dr. James G. Patton Jr. preached at the First Presbyterian Church. • Edward G. Robinson starred in “Tampico” at the Alamo Theater.

70 Years Ago: 1954

John Quidor died. • Services were held for J.C. Hopkins. • The Rev. and Mrs. Robert Allen were vacationing in Oklahoma.

60 Years Ago: 1964

Neil O’Neill was in Vicksburg from the University of Virginia visiting relatives. • Frank Pajerski Jr. left for graduate study in math at the University of Wisconsin. • Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Kolb announced the birth of their son, Howard. • Services were held for J.P. Lochridge.

50 Years Ago: 1974

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stainbrook of Mobile were the guests of Mrs. Keith Stainbrook. • Mr. and Mrs. Bobby McCammon announced the birth of their son, Jimmy. • Twins David and Deborah Kaufman were awarded scholarships to the University of Mississippi. • Howard Keller, a lifelong resident of Vicksburg, passed away.

40 Years Ago: 1984

George Brewer repainted the letters on the Vicksburg National Military Park sign, which faced Clay Street. • Lillie B. Williams died. • Taryn Dawn Griffith was six and Heidi Ann Haden was one on this day in 1984.

30 Years Ago: 1994

Services were held for Evelyn Moody.

20 Years Ago: 2004

The Madison Parish School Board was expected to select a committee to study whether to build a new school. 

10 Years Ago: 2014

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. had a plan to reduce the city’s $1.1 million deficit. • Devontae Montgomery, 19, got a five-year sentence for his role in the death of 17-year-old Ke’Marvin Stamps. • Warren Central, Vicksburg and St Aloysius were all winners on the gridiron.
