OXFORD — Ole Miss scored early. It scored often. It scored late.

It just. Kept. Scoring.

The sixth-ranked Rebels began one of the most anticipated seasons in the program’s history with an emphatic 76-0 beatdown of overmatched FCS member Furman on Saturday.

Ole Miss scored more than 70 points in its opener for the second season in a row, after beating Mercer 73-7 last year. It also scored 76 points in the 2015 opener against Tennessee-Martin. This was the 10th time in school history that the Rebels have scored at least 70, with six of those coming in the past nine years.

This was Ole Miss’ fifth-largest margin of victory ever, and the largest since a 92-0 victory over West Tennessee Teachers College — now known as the University of Memphis — in 1935.

Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart only played one half — Ole Miss led 52-0 after two quarters — but it was enough to pile up a game’s worth of stats.

Dart was 22-of-27 passing for 418 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for a 15-yard TD on the game’s opening series. He became the first Southeastern Conference quarterback since LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019 with more than 350 passing yards in a half.

Three of Dart’s touchdown passes covered 46 yards or more. Tre Harris was Dart’s favorite receiver, with eight receptions for 179 yards and two touchdowns of 61 and 22 yards.

Ole Miss outgained Furman 772 yards to 172.

Backup quarterback Austin Simmons was 7-of-16 passing for 111 yards and one touchdown. Matt Jones rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns — covering 17 and 46 yards — on only three carries.

Ole Miss will play at home against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 7 at 3:15 p.m. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
