St. Al takes rivalry loss to Cathedral

St. Aloysius fought the good fight in Mississippi’s Holy War, but could not prevail.

Tristan Fondren threw for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for a score, and Cathedral scored two late touchdowns to finally pull away from St. Al and win 34-10 Friday in the renewal of a Catholic school rivalry series that started in 1938.

“We competed. We were always in it. It was tough. I hate losing to Cathedral because it’s such a big rivalry, but it is what it is. We’ve just got to move forward and look forward to the next opponent,” St. Al coach Walker Mosby said.

Thompson Fortenberry rushed for 120 yards and a 31-yard touchdown for St. Al (0-2), and John Ellis Montgomery kicked a 33-yard field goal. Both scores came in the first half as St. Al, which lost 41-14 to Adams County Christian School last week, went into halftime down a manageable 21-10 to Cathedral.

Fondren threw touchdown passes of 76 and 43 yards to Terrance Lee, as well as a 15-yarder to Troy Dillon, in the first half.

Fondren’s 13-yard touchdown run with 6:53 remaining in the game effectively put it away, though, and then an interception led to Fred Lane’s 14-yard touchdown run with 1:36 to go for the final 34-10 margin.

The interception was the last of four turnovers that St. Al committed.

Quarterback Carson Smith also rushed for 80 yards for St. Al.

Defensively, Sam Hall had six total tackles and a fumble recovery, and Jaden Wheeldon had four tackles and a forced fumble.

“We took the lead in the first quarter. We ran the ball down the field. I was very pleased with the way the guys played. They played their tails off. They competed,” Mosby said. “Once again it has to do with shooting ourselves in the foot with turnovers.”

St. Al will go on the road next week to play East Rankin Academy.
