Voting is now open in the first Vicksburg Post Athlete of the Week contest for the 2024-25 high school sports year.

This week’s nominees are football players Abel Gonzalez (Vicksburg) and Thompson Fortenberry (St. Aloysius); Porter’s Chapel softball player Audrey Carraway; and Warren Central volleyball player Melissa Herrle.
Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline.

Abel Gonzalez, a junior kicker for Vicksburg High’s football team, kicked two field goals in a 20-6 loss to Holmes County Central in the Red Carpet Bowl on Aug. 30.

Audrey Carraway, an outfielder for Porter’s Chapel Academy’s softball team, went 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and five RBIs in a 13-1 win over Hillcrest Christian on Aug. 26. She also walked twice and scored a run in a loss to Franklin Academy on Aug. 27.

Melissa Herrle, a senior with Warren Central’s volleyball team, totaled 20 kills, 29 assists, and served 14 aces in wins over Callaway and Vicksburg High on Aug. 27 and 29, respectively.

Thompson Fortenberry, a senior running back and linebacker with St. Aloysius’ football team, rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown in a 34-10 loss to Cathedral on Aug. 30. Fortenberry has scored touchdowns in each of the Flashes’ first two games.

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline. The winner will be announced Wednesday on vicksburgpost.com and then be featured in our Friday print edition.
