1 injured in train derailment in Vicksburg

Authorities are still on the scene of a train derailment in the area of Mulberry and Oak streets, where one man was pulled from under a railroad car and is currently receiving medical attention.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said units responded to the accident just after lunch Thursday.

“At approximately 12:38 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department swiftly responded to a distress call reporting a train derailment,” Stamps said. “Upon arrival, Vicksburg fire personnel discovered a 50-year-old male trapped under a rail car, with the car almost completely engulfing his lower body. The dedicated firefighters worked tirelessly to extricate the man from this perilous situation.”

Stamps said the victim, who has not yet been identified, was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. This is a developing story and more information will be released as it is made available.
