Beginning Oct. 2, Vicksburg National Military Park will implement adjustments to the days of operation for the main Visitor Center and the USS Cairo Museum. These changes will adjust days of operation for the Visitor Center to Wednesday through Sunday and increase access to the USS Cairo Museum to seven days a week.
Currently, the USS Cairo Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday. With the adjustment to the Visitor Center operations, USS Cairo Museum will now be open seven days a week, increasing access to this unique experience, park officials said.
The park grounds and tour road will remain open seven days a week. The fee booth will be staffed seven days a week to collect fees, distribute brochures, and provide basic information and orientation. The park film is available on the park website: Video (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) The Visitor Center bathrooms will remain open seven days a week, though the building will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
In recent years, the park has struggled to staff the Visitor Center to maintain a seven-day-a-week operation and to collect entrance fees on a regular basis, park officials explained. These adjustments to days of operation will consolidate days off for staff, leverage the support of partners, and provide more in-depth coverage especially for weekend days when there is increased visitation, officials added.
