MACCC Football Roundup: Henderson, Hall lead Gulf Coast to easy win; East Mississippi thumps Hinds

The Warren County connection kept on clicking for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
Vicksburg High alum Tyler Henderson scored two touchdowns and Warren Central’s Trey Hall scored one to lead the sixth-ranked Bulldogs to an easy 43-7 victory over Mississippi Delta on Thursday.
Henderson caught three passes for 51 yards, including touchdowns of 34 yards in the first quarter and 12 yards in the second. The latter, with 10 seconds left, gave Gulf Coast a 23-7 lead at halftime.
Hall carried the ball 13 times for 73 yards and had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Gulf Coast quarterback Landon Varnes, the reigning NJCAA national Offensive Player of the Week, was 8-of-19 passing for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

“We wanted to run the ball, hit the ground hard,” Hall said. “We wanted to run them out of the Cover 2. Our offensive line played really well tonight.”
Gulf Coast will host No. 11 Jones College on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

East Mississippi 43, Hinds 3
Gavin Griffin rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a touchdown pass, as East Mississippi bounced back from a loss in its season opener by bulldozing Hinds Community College on Thursday.
Ty Keyes completed 13 of 24 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown for No. 10 East Mississippi (1-1). Griffin had about half of the team’s 210 rushing yards, and nine receivers caught a pass.
Hinds (0-2) managed only 88 yards of total offense. Quarterbacks Nassir Donohoo and Jabari Watson combined to complete 3 of 13 passes for 20 yards. The Eagles’ only points came on a 20-yard field goal by Tanner Hollingsworth in the third quarter.
Hinds defensive back Koury Vample two solo tackles and Kearris Gilliam had one. Both are Vicksburg High alums.
Hinds will play at Copiah-Lincoln on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Northwest Mississippi 22, East Central 17
D’mariun Perteet carried the ball 33 times for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Zach Wilcke was 16-of-30 passing for 197 yards and a TD as Northwest Mississippi (1-1) scraped past East Central Community College (1-1).
Perteet’s 2-yard TD run and Wilcke’s 27-yard touchdown pass to K.D. Gibson helped Northwest Mississippi take a 19-0 lead at halftime.
East Central got on the board with a 38-yard TD pass from Landon Sims to Lawrence Armstrong early in the third quarter, and to within 22-17 on Tyler Arrington’s 89-yard kickoff return TD 17 seconds into the fourth. The Warriors did not get closer, however.
Armstrong finished with five receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Itawamba 10, Pearl River 0
Ty Davis tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyran Mosley in the third quarter, and Eli Burciaga kicked a 30-yard field goal as Itawamba Community College (2-0) earned another low-scoring victory over Pearl River (1-1).
Itawamba has scored a total of 20 points in its first two games. Quarterbacks Davis and Tavion Faulk combined to complete 9 of 19 passes for 52 yards on Thursday. The Indians had 177 rushing yards, but held Pearl River to 178 total yards and only eight first downs.
Holmes 15, Co-Lin 13
Holmes Community College’s defense scored on a 30-yard interception return by Dandreyus Giles and a safety, and only allowed 198 total yards in an upset victory over No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.
Chase Richardson threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Johnson late in the second quarter, and Giles’ interception return with six minutes left in the third put Holmes ahead 15-7.
Co-Lin scored on a 5-yard run by Dezmond Ray with 11:43 remaining in the game, but a two-point conversion attempt failed. The Wolves only had two first downs on their last three possessions, none of which crossed midfield.
Jones College 31, Coahoma 16
Gerald Modest rushed for 84 yards, Cobey Craft had 62, and each player scored a touchdown to help No. 11 Jones College (2-0) beat Coahoma Community College (0-2).
Damion Gonzalez kicked three field goals for Coahoma, from 53, 53 and 36 yards. Ashton Strother scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter as the Tigers cut a 16-point deficit to 22-16.
Jones answered with a 34-yard field goal by Christian Baglione and a 61-yard punt return by Isaiah Roberts with 6:15 remaining in the game to finally put it away.
Coahoma linebacker Logan Myles, a Warren Central alumn, assisted on two tackles.
Northeast Mississippi 49, Southwest Mississippi 30
Antonio Kennedy rushed for 83 yards and three touchdowns, and Caden Greer threw three touchdown passes as Northeast Mississippi (1-1) surged past Southwest Mississippi (0-2) with a big fourth quarter.
Northeast scored 28 unanswered points after Henry Brewer’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Damarcco Blanton late in the third quarter put Southwest ahead 30-21.
Kennedy rushed for touchdowns of 11 and 3 yards in the fourth quarter, and Keion Mays broke off a 37-yard TD run. Greer’s 50-yard touchdown pass to Will Stokes put Northeast ahead 36-30 with 12:34 remaining and it never trailed again.
Mays finished with 86 rushing yards on only six carries. Stokes caught four passes for 88 yards.
Brewer was 28-of-44 passing for 253 yards and three touchdowns for Southwest. Blanton caught eight passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns, and also returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score.
