A City of Vicksburg employee was transported to the emergency room Tuesday morning after falling into a well at a sewer pump station, where he was briefly trapped.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said firefighters and other first responders hoisted the man to safety.

“The Vicksburg Fire Department responded to a call at the Bazinsky Road Sewer Pump Station, where a man had fallen into the well,” Stamps said. “When fire and rescue arrived, they found a city employee trapped inside the pump station. The Vicksburg Fire Department used an in-place chain hoist to rescue the employee.”

Stamps credited both first responders’ work, as well as the trapped employee for keeping his composure, as reasons the situation was quickly resolved.

“The employee’s fall into the pump station became a testament to human resilience, as he gathered himself and found the strength to keep his head and body above the liquids,” Stamps said. “His ability to brace himself against the interior walls, with his back against the walls and feet positioned for support, showcased remarkable courage and determination in the face of adversity. This was a truly heroic act, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of the individual in the pursuit of survival.”
