Joyce Louise Perkins

Joyce Louise Perkins, beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted family member, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 11, at the age of 72 in Raleigh, N.C., while holding her daughter’s hand and listening to gospel music.

Born in Vicksburg, Joyce was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a fervent supporter of her alma mater, Tougaloo College, where she remained actively engaged with her HBCU community. Following graduation, she dedicated nearly 40 years of her life to a fulfilling career at IBM, where she was known for her intelligence, reliability, and unwavering dedication.

As the eldest daughter of eight children, she was a guiding force for her family and a source of strength and inspiration. Joyce was born to Carrie Louise Perkins and Robert Taylor, both of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her loving daughter, Janelle Butler, and son-in-law, Jason Butler, who cherished her deeply. Joyce’s role as a grandmother brought her immense joy, and she will be remembered with great affection by her grandchildren, Maxwell and Jordan Butler, both of whom were the light of her life.

Joyce’s memory lives on through her surviving siblings, James Harper, Dr. Carolyn Allen-Washington, Glen Shorter and Ann Marie Gatsi (Esau). She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ben Perkins Jr., Larry Shorter and Carl Shorter. Joyce also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by her kindness.

A passionate supporter of numerous charities focused on health and social justice issues, Joyce’s commitment to helping others was a testament to her giving nature. While known for her private demeanor, sharp intellect, and dependable character, she also approached life with a sense of adventure, always ready to embrace new experiences.

In accordance with, and to honor Joyce’s wishes, there will be no public funeral service. Instead, a private family ceremony will be held later in Mississippi. Friends and family are encouraged to honor Joyce’s memory by making donations to the charity of their choice, with a special emphasis on supporting Alzheimer’s research, such as Alzheimer’s Association | Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia Help.

Joyce will be remembered for her boundless love for her family, her charitable spirit, and her lifelong thirst for knowledge. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
