Officials with the Vicksburg Warren School District (VWSD) and the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) have each issued statements they say are meant to clear up confusion over a perceived school shooting threat made on social media this week agains Warren Central Junior High School.

“We received a post about a threat that was not credible,” VWSD Superintendent Dr. Tori Holloway told The Post.

In a statement issued on social media late Thursday, VWSD officials addressed the “concerning post” saying, in part, “our goal is to provide you with accurate information and dispel any rumors you may have heard.”

VWSD and VPD said the threat was thoroughly investigated before being dismissed as not credible.

“The Warren Central Junior High School received information regarding a potential safety threat. We have investigated and found no evidence supporting these rumors. We appreciate the vigilance of students, staff and parents in reporting unusual or potentially unsafe situations. We are proud of our students for openly communicating with us when there are concerns.”

Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones echoed VWSD’s sentiment and said extra precautions have been taken at local schools Friday.

“Yesterday, a false social media post was circulated, suggesting there would be a school shooting in our community. Our agency has thoroughly investigated the source and determined that the post originated from a newly created Instagram account, which was quickly deleted after the misinformation spread,” Jones said. “While any potential threat must be treated with the utmost seriousness, I want to assure our parents and community that the Vicksburg Police Department has taken every measure to ensure the safety of our children. Officers are stationed throughout the city’s schools today and will continue to be present for an extended period of time, ensuring a safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff.”

Jones and VWSD officials are asking for continued vigilance in reporting any suspicious behavior on or concerning local school campuses, with Jones adding information may be false and should be reported to proper authorities rather than spread on social media.
