Flashes eager to end streak vs. Clinton Christian

Walker Mosby, ever confident and optimistic, believes his St. Aloysius Flashes can win every game they play. Some, like the one this week, they just seem to have a better chance than most.

The winless Flashes (0-4, 0-1 MAIS District 2-4A) go on the road Friday to face a Clinton Christian team that has also struggled. It’s another chance to finally end a long losing streak that has dogged the program for 2 1/2 seasons.

“I do believe this is an opportunity for us to win a football game, that’s for sure,” Mosby said. “I think we can win every week. But I’m excited about this one. I know the guys are too. We’re ready to play and just get after it.”

Clinton Christian (2-3, 0-0) has run hot and cold this season, which Mosby said goes along with its high-risk, high-reward style. The Warriors like to blitz on defense and run on offense. The former provides opportunities for opponents to make big plays, and the latter limits the Warriors’ chances of catching up if they fall behind.

The Warriors have scored 38 points or more in three of their games, and a total of six in the other two. In their three losses they’ve allowed an average of 56.7 points per game.

“They like to bring pressure with their blitz and play a lot of man, and when you do that sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad,” Mosby said. “When you run the football a lot, if you get down two scores it’s kind of hard to come back. They’re still a good football team and program. They’ve won games in the past and they just won one last week. Their style of play can get you in trouble and they live and die by it.”

While Clinton Christian has found some traction with its style, St. Al has been sliding across ice all season. Last week it lost 39-0 to Tri-County, which was the second defending state champion it faced in the first four games.

Mosby said he continues to be proud, however, of the way his players have continued to play hard against tall odds.

“Kudos to our players. I congratulate our guys. It was 39-0 at half and I go in there and all I tell them is to compete and keep fighting, and give great effort, and they did that,” he said. “They didn’t give up a single point in the second half. These kids play their hearts out.”

A bit more adversity hit the Flashes last week when quarterback Carson Smith left the game with an injury. Mosby said Smith is day to day, and if he can’t go then junior Sadler Lambiotte will get the start.

Lambiotte has been Smith’s back-up the past two seasons, but has seen enough game action that Mosby has confidence in him being a veteran presence in the huddle.

“Sadler Lambiotte is a junior, and he is a junior that I can trust. I love him. He is smart, he is athletic, his arm is good,” Mosby said. “If there was a guy to back up somebody, this is the kid that you want. I have a thousand percent confidence in Sadler Lambiotte.”
